Upon arrival in the school, students are assigned to one of the two School Houses, Phoenix and Griffin. They will remain with their house for the duration of their school career. They are encouraged to take part in House activities and to make every effort to contribute House points. These are totalled at the end of the school year and the winning house will enjoy a special treat, as well as seeing the House name entered on the Honours Board for that year.
House Activities and House Points
Students are able to contribute to the House point total in a variety of ways; first, by means of their personal merits - one merit equals a House point; second, by taking part in House activities and earning additional House points, according to the success of their contribution; third, by some personal achievement, such as a Grade Certificate for a musical instrument, or success in a drama production outside of school. Similarly, students may be reminded that points may be deducted for poor behaviour, such as that which leads to a student being sent out of a lesson, or to see the Headmaster for a misdemeanour.
House Activities
There is a wide range of House activities, which varies from year to year, but it is likely that some will remain in fixed positions on the School Calendar:
- October - House Hockey Match
- December - House Talent Show
- March - House Quiz Tournament
- Summer Term - Sporting Activities and Sports Day
House Officers
Houses are led by both teachers and students. The Heads of House are supported by members of staff, who also belong to the House. It is expected that the major role of liaising with students, organising events, encouraging participation and enthusiasm, will be undertaken by the student officers. These consist of:
- two Year 11 students, each as House Captain.
- two Year 10 students, each as Vice Captain.
- four Year 6 house Captains.
