Curriculum Curriculum Curriculum

When it comes to personal and academic success pupils at Hulme Hall make the grade. The School’s Head Boy and Head Girl are model pupils; they embody all the qualities you would expect to find in wellrounded individuals: compassion, confidence and commitment. They are respected by their peers and represent their school with pride.

Over the last five years GCSE results have consistently been well above average.

“...pupils made above average progress to GCSE and Hulme Hall was the leading school in the borough in 2005.” ISI Report 2007.

This success is due to a combination of teacher and pupil commitment to give their best, along with the School’s dedication to small class sizes: it is a mark of the School’s professionalism that every teacher makes it their mission to address the strengths and weaknesses of every child they teach. Each year additional support, revision sessions and examination preparation is made available to ensure that each pupil fulfils his or her optimum potential. It is no surprise that exceptional academic results have been achieved in many subjects. In recent years, pupils have achieved some of the country’s top five results in GCSE Mathematics and English Literature. Most pupils go on to Further Education and are well prepared for advancement in their preferred career.

The school attaches considerable importance to the care and welfare of pupils...” ISI Report 2007.

Communication with Parents Regarding Progress in School Work (Senior Division)

Pupil Progress Records

Normally, at the end of each half term, pupils will receive grades relating to attainment and effort for all subjects. (New pupils will receive their first Pupil Progress Record in November). In some cases, parents are asked to regard the progress reports as timely warnings and as an opportunity to provide active support. Here are some practical suggestions.

  • try patiently to draw from your child his/her honest reaction.
  • write to the Headmaster presenting what you consider to be your child's valid point of view or to draw attention to circumstances which may have a bearing on a disappointing performance.
  • steer a safe middle course: don't be over-critical, on the other hand, don't smother with sympathy. Strive to be calm and analytical, emphasizing that teachers and parents are uniting to do a duty and that both take more pleasure in awarding praise than in finding fault.

Main Report

Following internal examinations, a detailed report in booklet form will replace the "progress record" for the half term.

Parents' Evening

Full school reports are issued some days in advance of the Parents' Evening for the Year group. Staff are available to consult with parents between the hours 6.30pm and 9.00pm.

Interviews

The Headmaster will normally be pleased to see parents by appointment. At those times of the year when priority must be given to report writing and staff consultation, requests cannot be met without some delay. Very occasionally, a parent arrives in school and insists on speaking to a member of staff. Courtesy apart, there are obvious practical reasons why such demands cannot be met.

Parents who fail to reserve the date of their Parents' Evening cannot reasonably expect to be accommodated with an individual consultation for the simple reason that teachers cannot be asked to leave their classes. However, brief enquiries will be dealt with by the School Secretary over the telephone and where more detail is required, parents should write to the Headmaster.

Correspondence

The ideal medium of communication is a letter setting out concisely the grounds for parental anxiety or uncertainty. Parents are assured that at Hulme Hall they will not encounter the defensive stance which implies that teacher is always right! On the contrary, they will find that courteous requests for investigation are welcome; some of the problems presented are already on the way to a solution but, on occasion, parental letters bring to light circumstances of which the impact may not have been fully appreciated.

Communication

When telephoning please note:

  • During school day both telephone numbers are in use and "manned" from 8.30am to 5.00pm
  • Answerphone on - after 5.00pm
  • During school  holidays - Office Opening Hours are 10.00am until 12.00pm
Telephone Phone:
0161 485 3524 and 0161 485 4638
Fax Fax:
0161 485 5966

It would be helpful if you could ask for the person below:

  • The School Bursar for Fees
  • The School Secretary for General Information
who will discuss any problems with full regard to confidentiality and will refer any urgent matter to the Headmaster. Appropriate messages will be passed to members of the teaching staff.

The responsible person will telephone back where necessary, but it is clearly impossible for those with teaching commitments (always a priority) to be brought to the telephone.

NB. It is not realistic to assume that messages reaching the switchboard after 3.00pm can be conveyed to Form Teachers or Year Heads before the end of afternoon school.
